چکیده

NP-complete problems cannot have efficient algorithms unless P = NP. Due to their importance in practice, however, it is useful to improve the known exponential-time algorithms for NP-complete problems. We survey some of the recent results on such improved exponential-time algorithms for the NP-complete problems satisfiability, graph colorability, and the domatic number problem. The deterministic time bounds are compared with the corresponding time bounds of randomized algorithms, which often run faster but only at the cost of having a certain error

An Exact 2.9416n Algorithm for the Three Domatic Number Problem

The three domatic number problem asks whether a given undirected graph can be partitioned into at least three dominating sets, i.e., sets whose closed neighborhood equals the vertex set of the graph. Since this problem is NP-complete, no polynomial-time algorithm is known for it. The naive deterministic algorithm for this problem runs in time 3n, up to polynomial factors. In this paper, we desi...

Polynomial Space Algorithms for Counting Dominating Sets and the Domatic Number

Inclusion/exclusion and measure and conquer are two of the most important recent new developments in the field of exact exponential time algorithms. Algorithms that combine both techniques have been found very recently, but thus far always use exponential space. In this paper, we try to obtain fast exponential time algorithms for graph domination problems using only polynomial space. Using a no...

Improved Exact Algorithms for Mildly Sparse Instances of Max SAT

We present improved exponential time exact algorithms for Max SAT. Our algorithms run in time of the form O(2(1−μ(c))n) for instances with n variables and m = cn clauses. In this setting, there are three incomparable currently best algorithms: a deterministic exponential space algorithm with μ(c) = 1 O(c log c) due to Dantsin and Wolpert [SAT 2006], a randomized polynomial space algorithm with ...

SAT-Solving: Performance Analysis of Survey Propagation and DPLL

The Boolean Satisfiability Problem (SAT) belongs to the class of NP-complete problems, meaning that there is no known deterministic algorithm that can solve an arbitrary problem instance in less than exponential time (parametrized on the length of the input). There is great industrial demand for solving SAT, motivating the need for algorithms which perform well. I present a comparison of two ap...

Deterministic Algorithms for k-SAT Based on Covering Codes and Local Search

We show that satisfiability of formulas in k-CNF can be decided deterministically in time close to (2k/(k + 1)), where n is the number of variables in the input formula. This is the best known worstcase upper bound for deterministic k-SAT algorithms. Our algorithm can be viewed as a derandomized version of Schöning’s probabilistic algorithm presented in [15]. The key point of our algorithm is t...
